Hot Ice

Yesterday, if you like our Facebook page you would have seen a few status updates about our attempts to make "Hot Ice".

We were following this video from YouTube:

We didn't realize the boiling down would take forever -- it took nearly 2 hours.  So WP wasn't to thrilled. It made her school day much longer because I refused to let her do anything else while it boiled down.

We boiled it down, placed it in the refrigerator, and after 2 hours still no crystals. We assumed we did it wrong; so while she did her school work I did up another batch. I mixed it, boil it down -- let even more crystal form then the first time -- thinking that was our mistake.

Let it sit in the refrigerator for several hours -- nothing -- no crystals.  So we left it overnight and the majority of today. I was cooking steaks on the grill and WP came out asking if she should just dumb it seeing it was just a liquid with no crystals. I told her yes. She asked where, because Daddy was washing dishes at the kitchen sink. I told her just take it out front and just dump it. It's just vinegar and baking soda and wouldn't hurt anything just dumping it out front. (Even though it was just vinegar and baking soda I didn't want her dumping it in the back yard because of Puggy the Puggle).

A few minutes later -- WP came running out the back door towards me -- Mom, mom, look what happen?  What happen you wonder -- well the liquid mixture turned to a solid on her as she was going to dump it. She asked if this was the "hot ice"? I told her yes it was -- but didn't understand why it didn't work like the video, or why it turned to a solid on her when she went to dump it.  -- Other then it must have had some crystal or dry residue on the side of the plastic container and when the liquid touched that it made the rest of it turn into a solid.

I wish I would have thought to snap some pictures of our failed experiment.  Failed because it didn't go exactly like we thought it would.  However, it was still cool we got the hot ice to form -- even if it was accidental. One interesting thing about the "ice" was that it actually was hot, warm, to the touch. Much, much warmer then you would expect seeing it was just in the refrigerator.

Have you tried to make hot ice before? How did it go? Did it work like this video? Or did you do something else? Have you had experiments that have failed or didn't go as plan? Tell us more? Leave a comment.

Molly the Barn Owl and Homeschoolers

Carlos Royal did a live narration today for homeschoolers. Here is a clip of that narration.

I had meant to make a post about when this was going to be BEFORE it happened but I didn't get a chance to do that. Carlos didn't read off all of kids names, but the question "What are owls allies?" or something like that came from Superstar and Web-princess. Superstar and Web-princess thought it was so cool that Carlos answered their question! The narration starts about 3 minutes into the video clip. (I think it's more like 3 minutes and 25 seconds in).

The above is the recording of the live narration he did for homeschoolers. If you want to watch Molly Live you can do so by visiting Molly the barn owl and her owlets here on Catholic Christian Homeschooling or you can visit Molly The Barn Owl on Ustream.

More On Molly The Barn Owl

I don't have the exact time or date or anything like that but I've learned that Carlos Royal has been taking questions from various homeschoolers throughout the country and will be doing a live Q and A soon. He has been collecting the questions and will be answering them live.  When I have a time and date I will let you know.

For those of you that have just tuned in you can find more info about Molly the barn owl by visiting Carlos' Blog: Molly's Box. There he has some FAQ about Molly, what time McGee (her mate has visited), and what he even brought the family to eat.

We have been watching Molly and have been enjoying it. In addition I also found an PDF, thanks to the Molly Chatters At Ustream, of a Barn Owl book that can be downloaded and printed as needed.

Molly The Barn Owl and her Owlets

I'm sure by now most of you are aware of the LIVE feed of Molly the barn owl, McGee, her mate, and their owlets. As of today there are 2 owlets hatched and 3 owlets to go.  It's my understanding that the color are day and the black and white are night. It's a live 24/7 feed.

Here it is for your enjoyment (and mine). Sometimes it's easier for me to have something on my blog LOL

Silver Spoon For Baby

I know there was a time when giving a silver baby spoon was a popular gift for baby. I know that I have from my own childhood a silver baby cup and at one time there was a spoon as well. However the spoon is long gone. It may not be a widely popular gift these days, but you can still buy silver baby spoons.

I know there is the saying "born with a silver spoon in their mouth". This saying suggest that a person is able to get way with thing or have opportunities given to them based solely on their wealth or families wealth. However did you know that silver has antibacterial properties?? It's true I learned it from watching the Silver Video made by periodicvideos.

Hum?? I know back in the day those of wealth overall were healthier and I'm sure a lot of that had to do with the fact they had money and thus access to better things. However, after learning about silver's antibacterial properties, I wonder if the fact they ate with silver had something to do with that as well?

I have a set of fine "real" silverware sitting in the bottom of my closet in its case. It's been sitting there and has been sitting there for the last 9 1/2 years. It was a wedding gift and we just never used it. I wonder if I should drag it out of the closet and start using it, just because of its NATURAL antibacterial properties.

Here's the video:

Periodic Table in Videos

My daughter (7) bought an MP3-Video Player for her brother (8) because of his up coming surgery. She felt that he would really enjoy it, especially seeing both of his feet are going to be in a cast.

Anyway seeing we now have this player I have been looking for videos that I can legally download for the player. In the process of looking for videos I remembered about this website that has the Periodic Table in Video, FREE for viewing!!. Here is just one example of the videos available:

Warning: Don't try this at home! :)

If you visit the Periodic Table Site you will see they have videos for all 118 element. You can also visit their Youtube Channel. They have all those element videos AND more on their Youtube Channel.

Picture of Jesus Arrested in Rockford, IL

I share this video here because this is my hometown and I know thanks to sitemeter that I have local people visiting my blog. The priest in this video is my parish priest. I also know from talking to Father that the owner of the abortion clinic has come out dressed as the devil and has proceeded to "bless" Father while Father and other local priests are there praying.

I know this has nothing to do with homeschooling and I understand that your position on abortion may be different then mine. I'm not debating abortion, nor do I want this to become a hub for debate.

I share this here, because I know I have local people, people that live in Rockford, that visit my blog daily and I want them to know what's going on in our hometown. I have more videos about the local clinic posted on my website: Catholic Christian Living.

Warning: The picture of Jesus in the WINDOW of the abortion clinic is offensive. It features Jesus given the bird with both hands. This offensive picture was NOT the one arrested. The one that was removed was a picture that was on displayed by the pro-lifer that was there to pray. The picture that was removed by the police was beautiful, godly, picture!

There was a previous picture of Jesus given the bird and that was removed as the local news has reported. However it has been replaced with a NEW picture and that new picture is shown in the video below.

The new picture has  not just one hand but 2 hands given the bird. I learned from talking to Father (the same one in the video) that the new picture was there 2 weeks ago and is still there today!!! It was 2 weeks ago that I also learned that the owner of the clinic dress himself as the devil and proceeded to "bless" the priests there that were praying.

So a beautiful, godly, loving picture of Christ is removed by police, but a picture featuring Christ given everyone the bird is left on displayed.

UPDATE: It was just brought to my attention that about 1:18-1:22 in the above video you can see a hand given the bird as well, in the window. I have taken a snapshot of the image from the video.

It's hard to tell in the still picture above but when the video is moving it is clear that it's a hand given the bird as well. It is my understanding that it is the hand of the abortion clinic owner.

Aquasaurs: Spectacular

Back in Mid-May we had the kids double birthday party. We got our son aquasaurs and our daughter meat-eating plants. Both were kits. For the aquasaurs we were given eggs and for the plants we were given seeds. Of course seeds take time to grow, so were weren't expecting instant results. With the aquasaurs we were expecting to see little aquasaurs in 1-3 days.

When you set up the aquasaur kit you use 1/2 of the eggs. So we put in the first 1/2 waited about 6 days and after seeing NO results we added the other 1/2 and waited 6 days still no results. We figured we got a bad set of eggs and told the DS I would order more eggs to try again when I order DD her caterpillars. (She also got a butterfly kit for her Birthday).

Well I haven't order new eggs yet and I haven't clean out the aquasaur tank. It's been on my to do list. Well just now DS noticed that he has an aquasaur in his tank! I have no idea how long it's been there! So I'm not sure if it's going to "live" much longer of if we have killed it with shock! As soon as we noticed him we removed some of the icky water and put in fresh water. We also added a small bit of food. Like I said we don't know how long he's been there!

We should have seen movement and animals the first week of June and like I said we saw nothing then. So now with it being mid June who knows. Maybe they hatched and we just couldn't tell. Or maybe this one is a late bloomer! LOL. I'm just glad that I didn't clean out the tank now. LOL

Either way we know he's here now and perhaps we shouldn't have wrote them off so soon! For my DS sake I hope this little aquasaur that DS named Spectacular will live for a few more days at least!!! Below is a video of the little aquasaur narrated by me. (So for all those that have been wanting to hear my voice now you can LOL)

This is little video is about a dairy farm in Indiana. Lots of cows, lots of milk, it looked like it's a cool place to visit. Perhaps a road trip is in our future.

Bigfoot!

I was going through the pictures here on the PC and every time I see this picture (below) of DS I'm instantly reminded of Bigfoot!! I know why I'm reminded of Big Foot! Do you??

FYI: This picture was taken the same day we went hiking for Planting Socks!

PS: In case you don't know why this picture reminds me of bigfoot I've included the video of what I instantly think of when I see the above picture of DS. If you were to make a still 12 seconds into the video you will see what I mean! The only difference is that DS is a mirror image! LOL

Teaching Us To Paint

DD wanted to teach everybody "how to paint". She is being her cute adorable self in this little 2 minute video. As always with my videos the sound isn't the greatest so you may need to turn up the volume on your PC, just remember to turn it down when you are done.

Peggy The Pint-Sized Pirate

The audio and video isn't the greatest but I wanted to share this with you all seeing many of you seem to be interested on how the play went seeing I've been talking about those darn costumes.

DD and DS did a wonderful job! I was very proud of them! The clip is about 2 minutes long. It really is just the part of the play they were in :) The play is Peggy The Pint-Sized Pirate. It is about how Peggy is trying to save the other other pirates from the sea monster. In this part of the play Peggy (and Scummy) are trying to find the way to the sea monster. She stops to ask the whale (my DS) and the barnacle (my DD) for directions to the sea monsters lair.

EDIT ADD: I just want to add that you may need to turn up your sound/speakers on your PC to hear, but don't forget to turn them down when you are done :)

Edit Add May 21, 2009: more (still) pictures are up. click on "pics" in the menu above. Album's Name: Peggy the Pint-Sized Pirate.

Do, Re, Me, Fa: Sound of Music

First I have to thank Judy @ Benmakesten and Karinann @ Daughter of the King for bringing this video to my attention. Karinann assured me that I would know the words to the song and I did! Judy said that it was a FUN way to start the day and I have to agree with that!

As always ladies thank-you for making my day a little brighter.
