We have some ovaries on our kitchen counter.

We've been working with our science material: Behold and See Science 5. The current topic we are working with is the anatomy of a flower.  Our book describes the ovary as the part of the flower that will become fruit.

So my kids, thinking that it's funny, has decided to use the word when asking for the apples, oranges, or whatever other fruit we've had on hand this week.  Mama can I have a red ovary? (apple).  Mama can I have a orange ovary? (orange).   We have NOT discussed human reproductive anatomy yet, so they have NO idea that this is a name of a female reproductive part. They just think it's a funny sounding word and are proud that they have understood the lessons.

They even said it public at the store today. Mama can we buy more red ovaries?  I love that my kids are learning and absorbing the materials. It's good that they can look at the fruit and understand that when it was a flower that was the ovary and the seeds inside were the ovules.

However, given the word you can imagine why my face turned flushed at the store while doing a quick look around to see who heard and if they were given me some crazy looks.

Worms For Dinner!

Yuck!!! I know, but it's true we have been having worms for dinner guest for the last 2 nights! They also have been our breakfast and lunch guests as well. You know you're a homeschooler when the jar that hold the worms has been sitting on your kitchen table for the last few days, even during meal times and it doesn't wig you out! (In part because if we put them somewhere else we may just 'forget' about them!)

The kids just finished up chapter 1 of their science book, Behold and See 5. The topic of this chapter? Do you want to take a guess? (I'll give you a glue it has to do with our guests).  The topic was the earthworm. We dug up earthworms from our yard Thursday afternoon and place them in a jar so we can observe them.

newspaper covering jar of worms

We decided to keep the jar covered in newspaper to help keep the jar dark and hopefully encourage the worms to tunnel at the edge of the jar were we could observe them. The book suggested this lab experiment. It said to feed the worms lettuce or apple peels and sprinkles of water.  The book also suggested the filter on top to allow air in but keep flies and other pest out. The food would atract flies.

Jar without newspaper.  The green stuff is lettuce.

We put all the dirt in first and then put the worms on top. We put in about 5-8 worms and had to remove 3 of them this morning because it was clear they didn't make it.  We had a few we thought would be iffy on survival, but thought we would give them a shot. We for sure we have 2 left in the jar. Out of the two we have left (maybe more) we only have been able to observe one.

The one we have been able to observe has been hanging out at the edge of the jar.  We have been able to see it eat and move along. I tried to get a close up of this worm, but it's a little hard to make out. I did my best to show you by circling where the worm is.

Thing inside the circle is the worm.

You can also see where this worm has been. The moisture trail that follows behind this worm shows you where he has been. In an attempt to show you this I have put red arrows in the picture below to point out the moisture and a purple line to show you the trail.

(Catholic) Homeschooling 101?

I came across a tract from ETWN entitled: Catholic Home Schooling written by Mary Kay Clark. The article is basically a 101 on "Catholic" Homeschooling. While there are some very good points and ideas that I never thought of before, like having a philosophy statement, there are other things that are leaving my scratching my head and saying what?
If you do not enroll with a Home Study School, you must decide on a name for your Home School. Obtain a post-office-box address; have stationery printed with the name and address. Be sure not to include "home" in the name of your school. Official school stationery is needed to order textbooks, teacher's manuals, answer keys, tests, examination copies (to look over for 30 days), sample texts (which you may keep), and publisher's catalogs.
The above is an example of one of those statements that left me scratching my head and saying "what?". I do have a name for our homeschool, although I rarely used it. In fact the only time I've used it is when filling out the papers for Pizza Hut's Book It program. (Remember I've been homeschooling since June 2008). I do NOT have Official School Stationery and I certainly do NOT have a P.O. Box. I wonder how many homeschoolers have these things and if they would agree with the author that they are a MUST have in order to get textbooks, teacher's manuals, answer keys, etc.?

I will say in the author's defense that the tract was written in 1983. 26 years is a long, long, time. If anything, perhaps, this is an indication of how far homeschooling has come! We now have excess to vendors (Christian, Catholic, Secular), curriculum, books, websites, software, catalogs, etc all with a click of a mouse. Maybe, we should be grateful of how far homeschooling has come.

Arrest Made @ Norte Dame

People that know me know that I don't really get into the politics of things. However seeing this over the weekend made me want to cry:

Of course seeing the above video made me wonder what's the "whole" story? What really happen before the arrest? From the best I can tell Father was arrested for trespassing. Father along with about 15 (some reports 50) other people walked onto Notre Dame property to PRAY (the rosary) as a form of protest to Obama being there, at Notre Dome, yesterday. The group was told earlier that if they did come onto Notre Dame property they would be arrested.

I'm sorry but Notre Dame IS A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY. It's very, very, very sad to see Catholic-Clergy, being arrested @ a CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY for PRAYING A CATHOLIC PRAYER. They may have been told that they would be arrested ahead of time. However I, for the life of me, can't figure out WHY a Catholic University would be apposed to a Catholic Priest leading a group into prayer on campus!!

Who cares if it was in protest for Obama being there?? Obama being there does NOT change the Catholic-view of abortion. I know many, many Catholics are upset about Obama being at Notre Dome. I don't blame them after all Norte Dome is a CATHOLIC University. And Catholics, in my opinion, should be able to speak out and say I don't like this! They should have been able to PRAY at a CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY!!

curriculum for 2009-2010

As I was saying at the end of Feb I was going to be buying our curriculum for what will be our 2009-2010 school year. The new school year will actually start July 2009. Living in Illinois I'm required by law to teach the following subjects: Language arts, biological and physical science, math, history and social sciences (which shall include a course in the U.S. and Illinois Constitution), fine arts, health and physical development. All the material that I'm using can be bought either at CHC or Seton. The only subject area that I do not have covered is fine arts. I'm just not sure what to do there yet. Perhaps some of my readers will be able to offer some ideas!!!

Curriculum For Next Year

Wow! My first year of homeschooling my children is coming to a close. I estimate that I have about 10-12 week left and then we will be done with our material/books that we have.

12 weeks from now will be about the first week of May! Imagine being done with the school year the first week of May. When we are done with the school year we are going to take at 4-6 weeks off and then start up the "new" school year. After talking to my DH we've decided that there is no reason to have a long huge break, i.e. summer vacation. We generally are done with our school work by noon, which would give us the afternoons to do whatever we want. Plus we are free to take a day off here or there as needed. So no worries.

We for next year going to buy our core books through Catholic Heritage Curricula. I don't need all the core books seeing I will be able to reuse many of what we have, but I do need more especially the Math, Spelling and Grammar books. It's going to cost us about $150 to get all the books that I need for both kids this year.

That's a little bit pricey and I know many homeschoolers that do it for less, but I don't mind spending around $150, especially seeing I spent that much for the Public School registration fees for the the kids...and not to mention all the back to school supplies that had to be bought, pencils, crayons, markers, shoes, tissue etc. (Between 2 kids that easily was another $100)

Of course being homeschool we still have to buy those things, but I don't have to buy as much nor do I have to buy it all in one sitting, I buy it as NEEDED! i.e. when we run out. Heck for this homeshooling year I have only bought 1 box of crayons and 2 boxes of markers. Everything else, the pencils, colored pencils, pens, paints, folders, binders, were the LEFT OVER supplies that the kids brought home from PS. What' funny is that I wouldn't have been able to sent the use supplies back for the new school year, but they are good enough to be used at home.

We are going to be buying our NEW curriculum books at the end of the month. I can't wait.
