If you have just over an hour to spare I suggest you watch the video above! I watched it and was amazed on some of the things I was hearing and seeing. Then I started to wonder if my kids were "abnormal".
I say that because my kids still use make believe. They'll grab a stick and pretend it's a wand, sword, or whatever it is they want it to be at the time. However, the video gave me the impression that's abnormal compare to "today's kids". What's your thoughts about the video above? Is there truth in it? What are you doing in you home to help curb any of the effects advertising had on your children?

I don't have time to watch the video now - on our way to piano lessons in about 10 minutes - but I can tell you that my girls - who are the same ages as your kids - are happily "abnormal," and I hope to keep it that! We are considered "odd" (that's a nice way of putting how people describe us) because we purposely try to minimize the commercialization our kids are exposed to and because - gasp! - we're trying to preserve the innocence of their childhoods (with make believe, etc.). This results in awkwardness at times - my MIL cannot understand why I won't let the girls read a book called "Dork Diaries" because "they'd be reading that if they went to public school" (over my dead body, they would!) - but I don't care. It's right for our kids...and I just feel sad for the very many kids I know whose childhoods have been robbed.
ReplyDeleteOh I know Tina! I know most what's in the video you will know, most if it was things I knew. Seeing it all strung together in one video was "wow".
ReplyDeleteThe thing that stuck out to me the most is the many of the TV cartoons I grew up with (the poplar ones) were made to SELL the toys.
I never realized that. I knew their were the toys, but I guess I thought the toys were out because of the show...but in reality there is the show because of the toys.
It's the SAME for many of the kids shows today. They have the stuff to buy often before the show is out.
I am looking forward to watching this. I will come back and share my thoughts then...I can't watch it right now because L & J are waiting for me to watch Downton Abbey...but maybe later tonight or tomorrow:) Sounds VERY interesting...thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your thoughts on it Jude! :)) Enjoy Dowton Abby. I've watched all of season one and the first 3 of season two. So I'm waiting for tomorrow night when the 4 episode of season two will air. (Although I have a feeling I will be watching Once Upon A Time so I'll have to catch the 4th episode later)
ReplyDeleteWhere are you at in the series?
